Dwarf-Class Verbs, Theta-Theory and Argument Linking
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates a class of English verbs that pose a challenge for theories of the relation between thematic roles and syntactic structure. The search for principles that govern this relation is a central task of linguistic theory, and the problem of formulating these principles—the so-called “linking problem”—provides the background for the present study. Traditional solutions to the linking problem have taken a common form: The grammar is assumed to include a thematic hierarchy (e.g., Agent > Theme > Goal > Oblique [Larson 1988]) and a linking principle (e.g., the UTAH [Baker 1988]) that makes reference to structural positions. (See, inter multa alia, Baker 1997, Dowty 1991, Fillmore 1968, Grimshaw 1990, Jackendoff 1987, Perlmutter and Postal 1984, and Speas 1990.) 1

Optimal Constructions∗
This paper deals with a well-known problem in the discussion of argument linking, the flexibility that we find with particular verbs, and the constraints governing the integration of verbs with so-called argument structure constructions. We will show that traditional approaches as well as construction grammar need additional machinery to deal with variable argument linking. I will present an op...
متن کاملOptimality-Theoretic Lexical Mapping Theory: A Case Study of Locative Inversion
Locative inversion verbs seem to share the same argument structure and grammatical function assignment (i.e., ) cross-linguistically. This article discusses the nature of argument-function linking in LFG and demonstrates how the Lexical Mapping Theory (LMT) rendered in Optimality-Theoretic (OT) terms, where argument-function linking is governed by universal violable constraints...
متن کاملA . Davison 1 Structural Case . Lexical Case and the Verbal Projection
1.INTRODUCTION Transitivity is an ambiguous term. It can refer to the argument structure of a predicate, distingishing monovalent verbs with a single argument, from polyvalent verbs which obligatorily or optionally assign theta roles to more than one argument It can also refer to morphological and syntactic properties, such as the choice of case and the selection of auxiliary verbs. Ideally, th...
متن کاملL1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners
This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
متن کاملVerb Valency and Argument Non-correspondence in a Bilingual Treebank
In this paper we present a contrastive study of one interesting non-correspondence between deep syntactic valency structures of two different languages. On the material of the Prague Czech-English Dependency Treebank we observe sentences in which an Addressee argument in one language is linked translationally to a Patient argument in the other one, particularly we aim our attention at the class...
